2008 NEWS

Oh no! La Mano Press is closing?

Dear Friends,
After five great years at La Mano Press we have decided to say goodbye to LA.

Dear friends, After five great years at La Mano Press we have decided to say goodbye to LA. For me it has been about 14 years of learning experiences, acomplishments, many good moments and many great friends. We, Silvia, myself and all the friends who have collaborated with us, have done all our best to try to promote the arts in our communities. I hope we have at least left some mark along our way. We can no longer afford the expense of having LA MANO PRESS open while we live and work in Mexico. I am already working on a nice project down there: EL HUERTO, a center for ecology and arts, a botanical garden with an adobe building dedicated to the arts. To see it: http://www.lamanopress.com/huerto.html This Saturday November 15, join us for the GRAFICOMOVIL party, a traveling mural, mobile cinema, gallery and print studio. link: http://www.lamanopress.com/grafico.htm After two years of alot of hard work, Oscar Duardo and myself, have transformed the old and rusty 1947 delivery truck into this great piece of art. Now we want to take it to the streets and hopefully travel across country with it. In this event we will be asking for your cooperation, to make this a reality. Almost forgot, we have designed and produced 2 new skate decks. In this event you will also get a chance to see them, as they are hot off the press. Our last event will be our christmas sale on Dec. 5,6,7. As usual many artists will be here to share their wonderful work. I hope to see you here so we can toast together for LA MANO PRESS’s past history and the hope of a great future for all of us.

Invite friends.

Saludos, Artemio Rodriguez

Our last event in LA will be our upcoming Holiday Art Sale on Dec. 5,6,7.
As usual other artists will be here to share their wonderful work (see list below). We will have our t-shirts, books, and prints at unreasonably low prices, so come and take advantage and get some wonderful, unique handmade gifts.

We hope to see you here so we can toast together for LA MANO PRESS’s past history and the hope of a great future for all of us.

ABOUT US

La Mano Press is an artist-run center dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of printmaking. Through exhibits, on-site workshops and publications, La Mano Press aims to enhance the public's knowledge about the graphic arts.

GLOSSARY / TECHNIQUES

Limited Edition
A quantity of prints that use the same kind of paper, same pressure, ink, and printing registration. The prints are signed and numbered by the artist with a pencil on the bottom of the image to emphasise the number of the impression obtained from that particular plate and the total quantity of prints of the final edition. The standard way to number an edition is by placing the number of the print over the entire size of the edition. i.e. 3/20. AP (artists proof) and PP (printers proofs) are prints set aside for the artist and printers own use.

Etching
An intaglio technique where lines are created through the use of acids. Initially a ground is applied to the plate, the drawing is made on top of the ground exposing the raw metal and then submerged in acid for the bite to occur. A print is made by inking the incised lines and recessed textures of a plate wiping the surface, placing damp paper over the plate, and running it through an etching press.

Photogravure
A photographic negative is projected onto a metal plate covered with a light sensitive varnish, the plate is then bathed in acid, inked and printed in the same way as an etching, resulting in a photographic reproduction with a velvety satin-like finish.

Woodcut
A relief technique where the drawing is made on a wooden plank or block. The unwanted areas are cut away with a cutting tool. When inked, the uncut surface takes the ink and the image is transferred to paper.

Linocut
The same technique as woodcut only, the drawing is carved on linoleum which is a softer material.

Serigrapha
print made using a stencil process in which an image or design is superimposed on a very fine mesh screen and printing ink is squeegeed onto the printing surface through the area of the screen that is not covered by the stencil
